How to use this calculator
- Enter your Monthly Orders and Average Units per Order — the two required Business Volume fields.
- Choose the pricing model that matches your 3PL's quote: Detailed Pricing if separate line items are billed, or Bundled / All-In Pricing if one per-order fee covers fulfillment.
- Fill in the Order Fulfillment fields for your chosen pricing model — the other model's fields are hidden and never affect your result.
- Add your return rate and processing cost, and any kitting or value-added service cost, if they apply.
- Add your monthly receiving, storage, platform, minimum shortfall, onboarding, and other fees — all optional, all default to $0.

How 3PL fulfillment costs are calculated
The formulas differ slightly depending on your pricing model, but both roll up to the same three headline numbers.

Monthly Units Shipped = Monthly Orders x Average Units per Order
Cost per Order = Total Monthly 3PL Cost / Monthly Orders
Cost per Unit = Total Monthly 3PL Cost / Monthly Units ShippedExpected Monthly Returns is a projected average — for example, 333 orders at a 2.5% return rate gives an expected 8.325 returns, not 8. Rounding that down before calculating your return processing cost would understate it, so this calculator keeps the exact fractional value all the way through the cost formula.
Average Units per Order and Average Billable Additional Items per Order are handled with fixed-point arithmetic so fractional values (like 1.4 units per order) stay exact through every downstream calculation, instead of accumulating rounding error.
CartEconomics calculates and rounds each named monthly cost component to the nearest cent independently before totaling. This is an estimate based on the numbers you enter, not a live readout from your 3PL's billing system.
Detailed vs. Bundled 3PL pricing
Some 3PLs itemize every step — pick & pack, additional items, packaging, and shipping each show up as their own line on your invoice. Others quote one bundled per-order fulfillment fee that already includes those steps. Select whichever matches how your provider actually bills you; switching between the two never mixes values from one mode into the other's calculation.
What is included in 3PL fulfillment costs?
A typical 3PL invoice can include receiving (unloading and checking in inventory), storage, pick & pack labor, packaging materials, outbound shipping, returns processing, kitting or other value-added services, a platform or account fee, and sometimes a minimum monthly commitment. This calculator lets you enter each of these as a direct monthly or per-order amount from your own quote — it doesn't try to estimate any of them from receiving hours, pallet counts, or storage bins.
How to compare 3PL quotes
Two 3PL quotes with different structures — one detailed, one bundled — aren't directly comparable line by line. Enter each quote into this calculator separately, using your own real order volume and return rate for both, and compare the resulting Total Monthly 3PL Cost, Cost per Order, and Cost per Unit instead. Watch for a minimum monthly commitment on either quote — if you're not consistently hitting it, add the shortfall you'd actually be charged under Monthly Minimum Shortfall Fee.
Assumptions and Limitations
- V1 works entirely from figures you enter from your own 3PL quote or invoice — it never contains prefilled provider pricing and never claims an "average" 3PL rate.
- Models one calendar month at a time, for one 3PL relationship and one pricing structure (Detailed or Bundled).
- Doesn't derive receiving hours, receiving pallets, carton quantities, storage bins, storage pallets, or cubic-foot storage — enter the monthly amount from your quote or estimate directly.
- Doesn't model live carrier rates, carrier APIs, shipping zones, or DIM-weight calculations.
- Doesn't model pallet freight, freight classes, B2B wholesale fulfillment, EDI, customs, duties, or international freight.
- Doesn't model inventory aging, warehouse space optimization, or multi-warehouse cost optimization.
- Doesn't model SLA penalties, carrier surcharges, address corrections, hazmat handling, or cold storage.
- Doesn't compare against Amazon FBA or any specific 3PL provider — it evaluates the quote you enter on its own terms.
- This is an estimate based on the numbers you enter — it is not a live readout from your 3PL's billing system and may not match your actual invoice exactly.

Does this calculator use average 3PL prices?
No. This calculator never contains prefilled provider pricing and never claims an "average" 3PL rate — every figure it produces comes directly from the quote or invoice numbers you enter.
What's the difference between Detailed and Bundled pricing?
Detailed Pricing is for 3PLs that bill pick & pack, additional items, packaging, and shipping as separate line items. Bundled / All-In Pricing is for 3PLs that charge one per-order fulfillment fee covering those same steps. Use whichever matches your actual quote.
What is a minimum monthly shortfall, and what should I enter for it?
Many 3PLs set a minimum monthly commitment — a guaranteed floor on what they'll bill you. If your usage-based charges for the month come in under that floor, the provider charges the difference as a shortfall fee. Enter only that shortfall amount here, not your full minimum commitment. For example, if your minimum commitment is $2,000 and your qualifying charges came to $1,750, enter $250 — the difference you were actually billed.
Why do I have to enter Average Billable Additional Items myself?
3PLs vary in how they count "additional items" beyond a base pick & pack allowance, and this figure depends on your provider's specific billing rules, not just your order size. Enter the billable quantity shown on your quote or invoice rather than an estimate derived from your average units per order.
Why is Expected Monthly Returns a decimal instead of a whole number?
It's a statistical expectation, not a count of a specific month's returns — 333 orders at a 2.5% return rate is expected to produce 8.325 returns on average. Rounding that to 8 before calculating cost would understate your expected return processing cost, so this calculator keeps the exact value through the formula.
Can I use this to compare 3PL quotes against Amazon FBA?
Not directly — this calculator is built to evaluate a 3PL quote on its own terms, and doesn't model Amazon FBA's fee structure. A dedicated comparison is a possible future addition, not part of this calculator.
Does this calculator estimate receiving or storage costs for me?
