Amazon FBM Profit & Fee Calculator

See your real profit on a seller-fulfilled (FBM) Amazon order after the referral fee, selling-plan fee, and your own costs.

Amazon FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant) sellers pay the same referral fee and selling-plan fee as FBA sellers, but handle their own shipping instead of paying Amazon's FBA fulfillment fees. This calculator models one completed, non-refunded item at a time for a US-established seller on Amazon.com — enter your price, any shipping or gift wrap charged to the buyer, your referral category and selling plan, and your own costs to see your real net profit.

Last reviewed September 9, 2026

Item

The item price paid by the buyer, after any seller discount.

For an Individual selling plan, enter the Amazon-set shipping credit attributable to this item. For a Professional plan, enter the shipping amount charged to the buyer.

Amazon Fees

The Professional plan costs $39.99/month, but this calculator does not automatically allocate that account-level subscription to one item. If you want to allocate a share, add it to Other Seller Cost.

Your Costs

Your real carrier or postage cost — completely separate from Shipping Charged to Buyer.

Fill in the required fields and press Calculate to see your results here.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter this item's Product Price — your actual selling price after any discount.
  2. Add any Shipping Charged to Buyer or Gift Wrap Charged to Buyer, if applicable.
  3. Choose the Referral Category and Selling Plan that match this sale.
  4. Add your own product cost, actual shipping/postage cost, and other seller costs.
  5. Press Calculate, then check Net Profit and the fee breakdown to see exactly how it was built.

What is Amazon FBM?

FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant) means the seller — not Amazon — picks, packs, and ships the order. Amazon still charges the same referral fee and selling-plan fee it charges FBA sellers; the real difference is fulfillment. An FBM seller pays their own real shipping, packaging, and handling costs directly instead of paying Amazon's Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) fulfillment, storage, and inbound fees. FBM is not fee-free fulfillment — it simply moves the fulfillment cost from an Amazon-charged fee to a seller-paid cost you enter yourself.

Amazon FBM fees

A standard FBM sale can involve up to three Amazon-charged fees: the referral fee (a percentage of the item's total price, with a category-dependent rate and minimum), the Individual per-item selling fee ($0.99, only for the Individual plan), and the Media Closing Fee ($1.80, only for Books, DVD, Music, Software, and Video). This calculator does not model FBA fulfillment/storage/inbound fees, Amazon Digital Services Fees, or sales tax — see Limitations.

Individual vs. Professional plan

Individual: Per-Item Selling Plan Fee = $0.99
Professional: Per-Item Selling Plan Fee = $0.00

The Professional plan costs $39.99/month, but that's an account-level subscription, not a per-item fee — this calculator never automatically allocates it to a single item's economics. If you want fully-loaded per-item numbers, enter your own allocated share under Other Seller Cost; this calculator won't divide it by an assumed order count for you.

Referral fees and total price

Seller Revenue = Product Price + Shipping Charged to Buyer + Gift Wrap Charged to Buyer
Referral Fee Base = Seller Revenue
Referral Fee = category rate x Referral Fee Base, or the category minimum, whichever is greater

Amazon defines an item's total price — the referral-fee base — as list price plus shipping costs plus any gift-wrapping charges. Sales tax is not part of that total price, so it's never included here or anywhere else in this calculator. Referral-fee rates, thresholds, and minimums are category-dependent — some categories charge one flat rate, some charge a different rate above a price threshold, and some charge a progressively higher rate on each portion of the price. This calculator reuses the exact same category schedule as the Amazon FBA Profit & Fee Calculator — Amazon's referral fee doesn't vary by fulfillment method.

Shipping charged to buyer vs. actual postage cost

These are two different numbers. Shipping Charged to Buyer is revenue — for a Professional seller, whatever you configured the buyer to pay; for an Individual seller, the fixed shipping credit Amazon assigns (Individual sellers can't set their own shipping price). It counts toward Seller Revenue and the Referral Fee Base either way. Actual Shipping / Postage Cost Paid by Seller is your real carrier or postage cost — a seller operating cost that never touches the referral-fee calculation. If the buyer-paid shipping doesn't cover your real cost, that gap shows up in Net Profit, not in the fee math.

Gift wrap

Gift-wrapping charges collected from the buyer are treated exactly like shipping charges — both Seller Revenue and part of the Referral Fee Base. Any cost of your own gift-wrap materials belongs in Packaging Cost or Other Seller Cost, not a separate field.

Media Closing Fee

Books, DVD, Music, Software, and Video items incur a $1.80 closing fee in addition to the referral fee. This calculator applies it automatically whenever the Media category is selected — there's no separate checkbox, so it can never be applied to the wrong category or forgotten for the right one.

Referral-fee minimums

Most categories charge whichever is greater: the percentage fee, or a minimum referral fee (most commonly $0.30). A few categories — including Gift Cards, Media, Video Games and Gaming Accessories, Video Game Consoles, and Grocery & Gourmet — have no minimum at all. This calculator applies each category's own documented minimum automatically as part of the shared referral-fee engine.

Seller operating costs and profit

Total Amazon Fees = Referral Fee + Per-Item Selling Plan Fee + Media Closing Fee
Seller Operating Costs = Product Cost + Actual Shipping Cost + Packaging + Advertising + Other
Total Costs = Total Amazon Fees + Seller Operating Costs

Net Profit = Seller Revenue - Total Amazon Fees - Seller Operating Costs
Profit Margin = Net Profit / Seller Revenue x 100
Effective Amazon Fee Rate = Total Amazon Fees / Seller Revenue x 100
Return on Total Cost = Net Profit / Total Costs x 100

Return on Total Cost divides net profit by Amazon fees plus seller operating costs. This is a distinct metric from the Amazon FBA calculator's own return figure, which uses a different denominator — the two aren't directly comparable number-for-number, only in overall direction. A future FBA-vs-FBM comparison tool is the right place to normalize both under one shared definition.

FBA vs. FBM

Referral fees and selling-plan fees are standard Amazon selling fees that apply either way. The real difference is fulfillment: FBA sellers pay Amazon fulfillment, storage, and inbound-related fees, while FBM sellers fulfill orders themselves (or through their own logistics setup) and pay their own real shipping and handling costs instead. FBM does not mean fulfillment is free — it means fulfillment cost is entered directly as Actual Shipping / Postage Cost and other seller costs rather than charged by Amazon as a fee line.

Assumptions and Limitations

  • This is an estimate, not a Seller Central settlement reconciliation.
  • Models a US-established seller selling on Amazon.com, domestic US sales, in USD, one item per calculation, for a completed, non-refunded sale.
  • This calculator models a US-established seller selling on Amazon.com. Amazon Digital Services Fees or other location-dependent charges that can apply to sellers established outside the US are not calculated.
  • Refunds, returns, and refund-related Amazon fee adjustments are not modeled. Check your current Seller Central fee documentation for the applicable refund treatment.
  • Sales tax is not calculated — Amazon's total-price definition for referral fees excludes it, and this calculator doesn't attempt sales-tax computation of any kind.
  • The Professional plan's $39.99 monthly subscription is not automatically allocated to this single-item calculation. Add your own allocated share to Other Seller Cost if you want it included.
  • FBA fulfillment, storage, inbound, and placement fees are not modeled — this calculator is for seller-fulfilled (FBM) economics only.
  • Optional Amazon program fees (high-volume listing fees, rental/digital services fees, premium shipping programs, and similar) are not automatically modeled.
  • Advertising cost and your real shipping/postage cost must be entered manually — this calculator doesn't estimate either for you.
  • Amazon's fee schedule can change. Verify current rates against Amazon's own Seller Central documentation if a figure looks out of date.
  • This calculator is for general informational purposes only and is not tax, financial, legal, or investment advice.

Frequently asked questions

What fees do Amazon FBM sellers pay?

The same referral fee and selling-plan fee as FBA sellers, plus a $1.80 Media Closing Fee for eligible categories. FBM sellers don't pay Amazon fulfillment, storage, or inbound fees — instead, they pay their own real shipping and handling costs directly.

Does Amazon FBM have fees?

Yes. FBM isn't fee-free — sellers still pay Amazon's referral fee and, on the Individual plan, a $0.99 per-item fee. What FBM avoids is Amazon's FBA fulfillment, storage, and inbound fees, since the seller fulfills orders themselves.

What is the Amazon referral fee?

A percentage of an item's total price that Amazon charges on completed sales, with the rate, any price threshold, and any minimum fee depending on the product category.

Does Amazon charge referral fees on shipping?

Yes. Amazon defines an item's total price for referral-fee purposes as list price plus shipping costs plus gift-wrapping charges — shipping charged to the buyer is part of the referral-fee base, not separate from it.

Does gift wrap affect Amazon referral fees?

Yes — gift-wrapping charges are explicitly included in Amazon's total-price definition, the same way shipping charges are.

What is Amazon's Individual selling fee?

$0.99 per item sold, charged in addition to the referral fee, only for sellers on the Individual plan.

How much is the Professional selling plan?

$39.99 per month. Unlike the Individual plan's per-item fee, this is a flat monthly account-level subscription, not a per-sale charge.

Does this calculator include the $39.99 Professional subscription?

No. It's an account-level monthly cost, not a per-item one, so this calculator doesn't automatically divide it across sales. You can add your own allocated share to Other Seller Cost if you want it reflected.

What is the Media Closing Fee?

A $1.80 per-item fee on Books, DVD, Music, Software, and Video items, charged in addition to the referral fee. This calculator applies it automatically when the Media category is selected.

Does FBM have fulfillment costs?

Yes — FBM sellers pay their own real shipping, packaging, and handling costs instead of Amazon's FBA fulfillment fees. FBM shifts who handles and pays for fulfillment; it doesn't eliminate the cost.

What is the difference between FBM shipping revenue and postage cost?

Shipping Charged to Buyer is money coming in — it counts toward Seller Revenue and the referral-fee base. Actual Shipping / Postage Cost is money going out — your real carrier cost, entered as a separate seller operating cost that never affects the referral fee.

How do I calculate Amazon FBM profit?

Enter your item's price, any shipping or gift wrap charged to the buyer, your referral category and selling plan, and your own product, shipping, packaging, and advertising costs. Net Profit shows what's left after Amazon's fees and your own costs.

What is Return on Total Cost?

Net profit divided by total costs — Amazon fees plus your own seller operating costs. It's a distinct metric from the Amazon FBA calculator's return figure, which divides by a different denominator, so the two numbers aren't directly comparable to each other.

What is the difference between FBA and FBM fees?

Referral fees and selling-plan fees are identical either way. FBA sellers additionally pay Amazon fulfillment, storage, and inbound-related fees; FBM sellers instead pay their own real shipping and handling costs, entered manually in this calculator.

Is sales tax included in this calculator?

No. Amazon's total-price definition for referral fees excludes sales tax, so this calculator doesn't include a sales-tax field or attempt any sales-tax calculation.

Are refunds and returns modeled?

No. Refunds, returns, and any refund-related Amazon fee adjustments are outside this calculator's scope. Check your current Seller Central fee documentation for the applicable refund treatment.

What costs should an FBM seller include?

Your product/COGS cost, your real shipping or postage cost, packaging, any advertising allocated to the sale, and any other seller cost specific to this item — entered under Your Costs, separately from the buyer-paid amounts that feed Amazon's fees.

How accurate is this calculator?

It's an estimate built from Amazon's own published fee documentation, not a live readout from Seller Central — actual settlement figures can differ by cents due to rounding, and Amazon's fee schedule can change over time. Verify against your own account if precision matters for a specific decision.
