Shopify Profit & Fee Calculator

See your real profit on a Shopify order after Shopify Payments or third-party processing fees, Shopify's third-party transaction fee, and your own costs — for US Shopify merchants.

Shopify charges either a Shopify Payments processing fee or your third-party processor's fee, plus Shopify's own third-party transaction fee when you use a third-party provider. This calculator applies the standard rate for your plan automatically, or your own custom rate, and never divides your monthly Shopify subscription across orders unless you choose to allocate it.

Order

The price of the items in this order, before any discount.

Collected on behalf of the state — never treated as your revenue, but included in the amount charged to the customer's card.

Shopify Plan

Your Shopify plan determines the standard Shopify Payments rate and the third-party transaction fee rate. Shopify Plus isn't modeled in V1.

Payment Mode
Using Shopify Payments alongside a direct third-party payment provider? This configuration is not modeled in this version because Shopify applies additional fee treatment, including a 1.25% premium on eligible Shopify Payments transactions. Select whichever single mode below actually processed this order.

Shopify third-party transaction fee: $0.00 in this mode.

Your Costs

CartEconomics never automatically divides your monthly Shopify subscription across orders — enter your own per-order allocation if you want to include it.

Fill in the required fields and press Calculate to see your results here.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the order's product subtotal — the only required Order field.
  2. Add any discount, shipping charged to the customer, and sales tax collected.
  3. Select your Shopify plan (Basic, Grow, or Advanced).
  4. Choose Shopify Payments Only or Direct Third-Party Provider, based on how this order was actually processed.
  5. For Shopify Payments, use the published standard rate or enter your own rate from Shopify Admin. For a third-party provider, enter your processor's percentage and fixed fee.
  6. Fill in your own costs — all optional, all default to $0.
  7. Press Calculate.
  8. Check Net Profit first, then the detailed breakdown to see exactly how each fee was calculated.

How Shopify fees are calculated

Three groups of formulas combine to produce your final profit: revenue, payment and transaction fees, and the totals that roll everything together.

Revenue

Net Product Revenue = Product Subtotal - Discount
Customer Payment = Net Product Revenue + Shipping Charged + Sales Tax Collected
Seller Revenue = Net Product Revenue + Shipping Charged

Shopify Payments Only

Shopify Payments Processing Fee = (Customer Payment x rate) + fixed fee
(published standard rate for your plan, or your own entered rate)
Shopify Third-Party Transaction Fee = $0

Direct Third-Party Provider

External Processor Fee = (Customer Payment x processor rate) + processor fixed fee
Shopify Third-Party Transaction Fee = (Net Product Revenue + Shipping + Sales Tax) x plan rate
  (Basic 2.0% / Grow 1.0% / Advanced 0.6%)
Payment & Transaction Fees = External Processor Fee + Shopify Third-Party Transaction Fee

Totals and profit

Total Costs = Payment & Transaction Fees + Shopify Plan Allocation
  + Seller Operating Costs
Net Profit = Seller Revenue - Payment & Transaction Fees
  - Shopify Plan Allocation - Seller Operating Costs

Sales tax collected is never treated as your revenue — it's collected on behalf of the state — but it is included in the amount charged to the customer's card, so it's part of the base both fee formulas use.

Shipping charged to the customer is included in the payment amount because that's literally what runs through the card: the customer's card is charged for the product, shipping, and tax together, and Shopify's own third-party transaction fee formula explicitly includes shipping and tax in its base too.

Payment processing fees are estimated from the payment amount captured for the order. This is not a claim that CartEconomics reproduces Shopify's internal ledger — Shopify bills third-party transaction fees over a 30-day billing period, and this calculator estimates the fee for one order at a time.

Shopify Payments vs. third-party provider

Shopify Payments Only means your store uses Shopify Payments as its sole direct payment provider — you pay only the Shopify Payments processing fee, with no separate third-party transaction fee. Direct Third-Party Provider means the order was processed by an external payment processor instead — you pay that processor's own fee, plus a separate Shopify third-party transaction fee based on your plan. Using Shopify Payments alongside a direct third-party provider at the same time isn't modeled in this version — see Assumptions and Limitations below.

Why is Shopify Plan Allocation optional?

Your Shopify subscription is a fixed monthly cost, not a per-order fee, and how much of it to attribute to any single order depends on your own order volume and accounting approach. Rather than guess by dividing your monthly fee across an assumed number of orders, this calculator leaves Shopify Plan Cost Allocated to This Order at $0 by default — enter your own per-order allocation only if you want to include it.

Interpreting your results

Net Profit is what you keep after payment/transaction fees, your Shopify plan allocation, and your own seller costs. Profit Margin expresses that profit as a percentage of Seller Revenue — of every dollar you actually earned on this order, how much became profit. Effective Fee Rate is Payment & Transaction Fees as a percentage of Customer Payment — a quick way to see your real, all-in payment cost as a share of what the customer paid, not just the headline percentage rate. Return on Cost compares profit with all modeled costs, including payment and transaction fees — it can look very high when you've entered few or no seller costs, since payment fees alone can still be a small number relative to a profitable order.

Current Shopify plan rates

These are Shopify's published US online rates as of the last-reviewed date below — see Sources for the official pages.

  • Basic — Shopify Payments: 2.9% + $0.30. Third-party transaction fee: 2.0%.
  • Grow — Shopify Payments: 2.7% + $0.30. Third-party transaction fee: 1.0%.
  • Advanced — Shopify Payments: 2.5% + $0.30. Third-party transaction fee: 0.6%.

Assumptions and Limitations

  • V1 models a single completed US online order at a time, in USD, for Shopify Basic, Grow, or Advanced. Shopify Plus isn't modeled.
  • Stores using Shopify Payments alongside a direct third-party payment provider are not modeled in V1. Shopify currently applies additional fee treatment to that configuration, including a 1.25% premium on Shopify Payments transactions.
  • Payment processing fees are estimated from the payment amount captured for the order. This is not a claim that CartEconomics reproduces Shopify's internal ledger.
  • Premium-card and international-card rates exist and are published by Shopify, but V1 intentionally uses only the standard published rate or a merchant-entered custom rate — it does not detect premium or international cards automatically.
  • The custom Shopify Payments rate is your own supplied rate, viewable in Shopify Admin under Settings > Payments — not a guessed "blended" estimate.
  • The Direct Third-Party Provider mode models a generic external card processor. It doesn't apply to PayPal Express Checkout, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments, manual payment methods, or gift cards / store credit, which Shopify treats differently.
  • Doesn't model Shopify POS or in-person payments, Shopify Managed Markets, currency conversion, duties or import-tax fees, Shopify Tax, chargebacks, refunds or partial refunds, Shop Pay Installments, subscriptions, buy-now-pay-later, marketplace sync fees, apps, or shipping-label purchases.
  • The Shopify Plan monthly subscription is never auto-divided across orders — enter your own per-order allocation if you want to include it.
  • Shopify's third-party transaction fee is billed over a 30-day period on your actual account; this calculator estimates it per order.
  • This is an estimate based on the numbers you enter and Shopify's published fee schedule — it is not a live readout from your Shopify billing and may not match your actual payout exactly.
  • This calculator is for general informational purposes only and is not tax, financial, legal, or investment advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Shopify Profit & Fee Calculator?

It's a tool that estimates your real profit on a single Shopify order after Shopify Payments or third-party processing fees, Shopify's third-party transaction fee where applicable, and your own product and operating costs.

What's the difference between Shopify Payments and a third-party provider?

With Shopify Payments as your sole provider, you pay only the Shopify Payments processing fee. With a direct third-party provider, you pay that processor's own fee plus a separate Shopify third-party transaction fee based on your plan — 2.0% on Basic, 1.0% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced.

Why is sales tax included in the payment amount but not in my revenue?

Sales tax is part of what's actually charged to the customer's card, so it's part of the base used for fee calculations — but it's collected on behalf of the state, not earned by you, so it's never counted as your revenue or profit.

Why does shipping charged to the customer count toward the fee base?

Because it's part of the same card transaction as the product price — the customer's card is charged for the full order total, including shipping, and Shopify's own documented third-party transaction fee formula explicitly includes shipping charges in its calculation.

Can I use this if I use Shopify Payments and a third-party provider together?

Not in this version. Shopify applies different fee treatment to that configuration — including a 1.25% premium on Shopify Payments transactions — that this calculator doesn't calculate. Model each payment method's orders separately using whichever mode actually processed them.

Does this calculator account for premium or international card rates?

No. Shopify publishes separate premium-card and international-card rates, but a merchant can't know in advance which rate a future order will hit, so V1 uses only the standard published rate or your own entered rate. If you know your actual blended rate is higher, enter it as a custom rate.

Why do I have to enter my own processor rate for third-party providers?

External payment processors set their own pricing, which Shopify doesn't publish — enter the percentage and fixed fee your specific processor actually charges you.

How does a discount affect my Shopify fees?

A discount reduces Net Product Revenue, which lowers the Customer Payment your processing fee is calculated on — so a bigger discount means a smaller percentage-based fee, in addition to less revenue. It doesn't change the fixed portion of the fee.

Once you know your real Shopify profit, use the Product Pricing Calculator to find a price that hits a target margin, or the E-commerce Profit Calculator to compare profitability across a broader set of sales.
